There are plenty of things I feel strongly about. As I don’t want to get too deep or too controversial, one thing that I would like to talk about is health and physical education in school systems. There have been many debates to take away physical education programs, however I cannot stress just how important it is to not only keep them, but to make them better. After majoring in Kinesiology and focusing on children and sport, I wish physical education programs especially throughout elementary grade levels would not only vaguely teach children how to play a certain sport or how to run around, but teach them the correlation between physical activity and health, why it’s important to stretch, good nutrition, why it’s important to take care of our bodies earlier than later, and so forth.
I get extremely annoyed when I see kids constantly on their ipods, phones, & computers, & sit in front of their tvs or play videogames all day instead of going out to play. As much as I love these things, some of my best childhood memories involved being outside or doing something. It’s sad that some children know how to browse through the internet, but don’t know how to catch a ball (a fundamental motor skill). Physical education was probably one of my favorite school subjects… I got to run around, play random sports, take physical assessments, and so forth. However, I never really learned its importance, what was good for me and what wasn’t or even realized how it plays closely with our health. Even now, I’ll come across adults at work who know nothing about being healthy or how to be healthy. Moreover, they know nothing about how to be physically active. If school boards really thought that physical education wasn’t benefitting our children… instead of taking them out, they need to make them better.
